I used to love to tinker with my car–change the spark plugs, adjust the timing, tweak the carburetor and generally have fun making it run sweet. No, this isn’t a picture of me and my car. It is just to show how far we have come in developing our machinery.
Now days cars are so complex it takes a rocket scientist to repair one. In fact I saw an ad on TV depicting that very thing. There are so many computerized devices “communicating” with one another that you cannot change the battery without great risk of messing up some computerized system or another. That is assuming you can even find the battery.
I do have to admit that there are advantages to all the systems in the cars. For one, I don’t have to build a charcoal fire under my engine in the winter any more to get the car started. They seem to start fine even in the extreme cold. It’s kind of nice to know what the temp is outside, and the climate control system is wonderful.
Yes, a lot has improved, but as I drive down the road on cruise control in my electrical adjusted heated seat I glance at my GPS to see how far I have left in the trip. I can’t help but think of the good ‘ol days. “Are we there yet, Daddy?”
